>> HISTORY OF THE SUCCUBUS CLUB You must either be really bored or just way too nosey if you're here. But here it is... the history of The Succubus Club. It's written in the third person to avoid confusion. >> how it started - 1998 The time was the Spring of 1998. Kitty and Candy met when they were both students at Cal State Long Beach. Candy was finishing her BA in Film/Radio/Television and Kitty was back at school getting her teaching credential. Kitty wanted to join the campus radio station because it was something she'd always wanted to try. Candy was the Music Director who handled all new personnel at the time that they met and was scheduled to train Kitty on the finer points of the crappy equipment in the cramped studio at the Film Department. As Candy was doing the training, Kitty saw her Buffy keychain and remembered to ask about it later. Once she did, they went through the whole, "Oh my gosh, you like Buffy? I like Buffy, too!" and a friendship was born. Kitty would visit Candy's office for lunch and they would end up talking for hours upon hours about the show. One day, the following exchange took place:
Candy thought Kitty was either high or just playing some kind of cruel joke on her, but soon found out that she was completely serious. During the many months while the new CSULB Internet radio station (K-Beach) was being built, Kitty was working as Assistant Program Director before taking over that position in December of 1998. The target date for our first broadcast was February 1st, 1999. Our show would begin two days later. >> the first year - 1999 They were embarking on new territory with this show. Never before had either of them done talk radio, and never before had there been a show dedicated to Buffy. Would anyone listen? Would they suck? How much time would pass before they'd want to strangle each other? On February 3rd, at 9am, they began their first show. The station was unable to record shows at the time, so it's not possible to retrieve it to hear how it went. But they were nervous, and stiff, as evidenced by the tape of the following week's show. The format was simple for an hour-long show: talk about the previous night's show for 20 minutes. do a five minute update of band tour dates and various news, then highlight another classic episode during the final 20 minutes. At the time they still didn't have a website and weren't even advertising the show to die-hard Buffy fans, the people they were doing the show for. For the first six months, their only listeners were immediate family and a couple of friends - literally. But they weren't disappointed. They knew the audience was out there, they just had to reach them. Over the summer, they highlighted classic episodes from seasons 1 and 2 and planned to expand the show to two hours with the impending arrival of Angel in the fall. With a time change to 12pm and one extra hour to fill, September came and the new show was launched with a new website. By this time, they had decided to begin posting a small message on The Bronze Posting Board to try and get as many Internet-based Buffy/Angel fans as possible to listen. Looking back, it was probably a good idea that they used those first six months to get used to the format as well as each other. With new listeners joining the show weekly, K&C were starting to have a lot more fun on the air and it showed in the quality of the show they put out every week. >> sophomore slump? - 2000 The beginning of this year started with a big announcement. Candy, who was going to be graduating in May, had made the decision to move to New York. With that, everyone knew this would be the end of The Succubus Club as they knew it. Over the following few months a listener from the CSULB dorms, Shaun, had visited the show on numerous occasions. It was assumed that The Club would continue, with Shaun as the new co-host. They set out to attend the 2000 PBP with the intention of meeting some of the listeners they had heard from as well as seeing if any VIP's would want to visit the show over the next few months. These meetings led to the three VIP visits they had by season's end - they welcomed Larry Bagby (Larry, Buffy), Bailey Chase (Graham, Buffy) and Jane Espenson (writer/producer, Buffy) to The Club. Jane was actually the guest on Candy's final show. It was a sad day for both Kitty and Candy as she said goodbye to everyone who had meant so much to her over the last year and a half. Candy moved to New York in July and Kitty tried to do a couple of Club shows at a local Internet radio station because K-Beach was going through a struggle of powers at the time. That show fell through around the same time that Candy returned from New York. Almost miraculously, the K-Beach problems had been fixed and it was mid-August, just enough time to put together a new year of shows for the station and get back to the Club! September came again and the show moved to 6pm to accommodate both Kitty and Candy's working schedules since they were no longer students. They were a bit worried that they had lost their listeners due to their lengthened hiatus over the summer and were prepared to get them back. They continued to post on The Bronze and quickly, due to word of mouth, listenership was higher than ever before. >> third year's a charm - 2001 2001 was easily their most successful and satisfying year yet. In February, they attended the their second PBP and were able to meet some long-time listeners. In addition to strengthening friendships with those listeners and making new ones, they went on to welcome VIP's Jarrod Crawford, Andy Hallett, Mark Lutz, Steven DeKnight and Drew Greenburg to the show as well as welcomed back Bailey Chase and Jane Espenson. New listeners contacted the show every week and the shoutout page continued to grow as people told their Buffy and Angel friends about the show. >> senior year - 2002 2002 started out with a bang as they welcomed back to the show, Buffy writer Drew Greenberg. They attended their third PBP together and for the first time decided to make a weekend of it. They met a lot of their listeners and met up with some of their old friends and had a blast doing it all. Candy even won a Jane Espenson signed comic book at the auction, before accidentally leaving it on the counter of the donut shop across from the hotel at 1am. Oops! A big change happened toward the end of this season. Due to some programming and personal conflict at Kbeach Radio, the gals packed up their toys and moved across town to KLBC, another college radio station that was more than happy to put them up. The move proved to be nothing but positive because they found a home and a staff that was supportive and treated them with respect, something that was missing during their last year at Kbeach. They also gained a Producer! The girls, as well as the listeners, have come to know, love and depend on Producer Ethan. He now has his very own fans and the girls couldn't be happier with him. Being at Kbeach for so long, these big changes were hard to adapt to, but they finally found their groove in the final three weeks of the year when they were fortunate enough to have had three big guests live in the studio. Returning for the second time was Steven DeKnight, who took the heat for Tara's death and perhaps, in the span of two hours, single handedly pissed off more people than Kitty and Candy had in three years prior. Next up was first time guest David Fury. Having never even met the man, the girls were a little nervous about the interview, but he turned out to be a great guest and has promised to return in the future. And last but not least, as has become tradition, Jane Espenson trucked down to Long Beach for the third straight year after the season finale to answer questions and shed a little light on the upcoming seasons. As usual, she answered what she could and got around things she couldn't. All of these guests signed various memorabilia that the girls plan to give out at the start of this upcoming year. The show's listener fanbase has grown larger than they ever expected it to and they couldn't be more surprised and more flattered that people actually enjoy the show as much as they do. Due to scheduling problems at KLBC, they were unable to air over the summer, but they're returning in September to start another year. Is this Buffy's last season? Is this the SC's last season? Answers will come in time. Stay tuned! >> keep on truckin' - 2003 2003 brought a few answers to those questions as well as some of the best-received shows they've done. As every new year begins, PBP weekend was upon them and they decided to shake things up a little bit. Thanks to the never-ending help of Producer Ethan and Advisor Ken at the station, they were able to broadcast a very special edition of the show the Wednesday prior to the big weekend. A handful of listeners who were already in town made their way to Long Beach to become Kitty and Candy's first ever live studio audience. It was slightly awkward, but a very fun time. This night was also the beginning of a weekend spent with the folks of CityofAngel.com, who wanted to interview them for a feature at the site (read here). That weekend they headed up to Los Angeles for their fourth and final PBP. It was a bittersweet weekend, but one that will never be forgotten. For the first time, they were fortunate enough to host "Pie with Kitty and Candy" which was graciously co-sponsored by CoA. The turnout was more than they could've ever hoped for and much fun was had. Ethan drove up for the night Friday to meet up with some of the listeners and the weekend finished up with the gals being the guests of their friend Flipley at a special luncheon with David Fury and Jane Espenson that he won in a PBP raffle! Shortly after that, the girls made the decision to continue with the show into the next season, even with Buffy coming to an end. Speaking of which, the end of the year brought them more special guests, most of which were returning to the show. However, first up was Succubus Club virgin and newcomer to the Buffy writing staff, Drew Goddard. He was an absolute pleasure to interview and not to mention, freakishly tall. Next up was the dastardly duo of returning guests Tim Minear and David Fury. Together! Quite an eventful two hours was had as they got some great answers to some long-standing questions. Lastly, they welcomed a trifecta of Buffy writers. Not only did they welcome back for the fourth time Jane Espenson, but back for a third time was Drew Greenberg and they were accompanied by the lovely Rebecca Rand Kirshner, who was visiting for the first time. It was deemed a "Buffy Writers Roundtable" and turned out wonderfully. A fun time was had by all as we learned a great deal about what goes on behind the scenes with the writing staff. The season ended as the girls discussed the final episodes of Buffy on May 21st. They had every intention of coming back the following week to tie up the year but scheduling conflicts prevented them from doing so. The summer has been long and they're looking forward to returning for a fifth SC season!
